Surf's Up!

To the tune of "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out" (thanks Louise!):

"If you want to go work, go work;
If you want to go surf, go surf;
'Cause there's a million ways to smurf;
You know that there are."

I was in the water at Asilomar by a little after 9 this morning; only stayed a little
while there. While the waves were nice, it was just too much work for little 'ol me
to get into position, so after a couple ok rides, I headed in around 10.

Stopped by the aforementioned Drive-Thru Starbucks for a regular coffee and a bran muffin, then headed over to Tioga where I saw a couple guys being towed into 2-3 foot waves. Very funny. Surfed there for about an hour and a half, got even more tired but still couldn't drag myself away from the water (it's been so beautifully crystal clear the last few days) so I got out and drove over to Del Monte, where the paddle out is insanely easy, but of course the waves aren't as nice. Surfed there for another 90 minutes or so, was visited by 3-4 dolphins for a little while before they headed on towards the wharf. Managed to hit my head on the bottom at one point, fortunately the cold water kept down the swelling ;)

All in all, another great day for surfing in Monterey!

btw, for those who haven't seen it, here-in I include my deeply incisive commentary
on the movie "What the bleep do we know?":

Chiropractors who think they're physicists

Really, if you read the title, there isn't much more I can say, other than that I will never get back the time I wasted watching this pseudo-intellectual infomercial for what's her name's lame-ass church of "I know better than you."

Quick Note

Just a quick update before I head over to Liquid Surf Shop on Del Monte in Seaside (next to First Impressions, a print shop/party supply store (I got some great party supplies there for New Year's Eve) and across the street from Midas, where I've never gone, but it's next door to the Starbucks with the drive-thru window which is convenient after surfing) ((Just doing my part to encourage local commerce)) Anyway, what was the point? oh yeah, I need to go to the surf shop to get a new fin for my longboard since I forgot to warn JohnT not to ride it all the way into the sand. Why not, you may ask; well, for one, the fins (or "skegs") can catch on the bottom which can cause them to snap off given sufficient weight on top of them. Actually, that's the only reason I can think of, but it's a good one.

Surf was great last Thursday and Friday, I couldn't believe how good the waves were at Del Monte Beach, there were actual SHOULDERS, fer goodness sake.

Anyway, check out the Johari link either here or on the sidebar.

Have a good day, keep the tire side down when you're driving, and Don't Mau!

Who needs sleep? (You know, this blog _is_ quite inquisitive.)

Group Photo Cropped

Really, if you follow the link on the above picture and check out the rest in the set, then I won't need to type the rest of this blog entry. A picture is worth a thousand words.

For those who were there, you already know; for those that weren't, it sucks to be you (it's a hard-knock life, I know.)

Right now I just have 2 questions: "Is there coffee?" and "Where's the coffee?"

btw, since I didn't get any good karaoke videos, check this one out instead:

Stupid IQ Test

Your IQ Is 140

Your Logical Intelligence is Below Average

Your Verbal Intelligence is Genius

Your Mathematical Intelligence is Genius

Your General Knowledge is Genius
A Quick and Dirty IQ Test

Ok, so I cheated on the last question, so my "IQ" is "really" 135 - but even though I got all of the logic questions correct (I checked) my Logical Intelligence is still below average. I find that amusing. Here-in follow my answers, so if you don't want to know, stop reading.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Mary is two times as old as Nancy. Nancy is 1/3 Lucy's age. Who is the oldest?
* Mary
* Lucy
* Nancy

Well, Duh, clearly Lucy's the oldest, since she's three times as old as Nancy, while Mary is only twice.

2. What is worth more a trunk full of nickels or a half trunk full of dimes?
* They are worth the same
* The half trunk full of dimes
* The trunk full of nickels

I like this one. Assume that a trunk holds 1,000 nickels. 1/2 a trunk holds 500 nickels. Now, 500 dimes would be worth the same as 1,000 nickels, but since dimes are smaller than nickels, you can fit more than 500 dimes in half a trunk, ergo the half trunk full of dimes is worth more.

3. "If Jody doesn't pay her ticket, she will go to jail." Which other statement must be true?
* If Jody pays her ticket, she won't go to jail.
* If Jody goes to jail, she didn't pay her ticket.
* If Jody doesn't go to jail, she paid her ticket.

Basic contrapositive. the third statement must be true.

4. Dave is offered a raise if he can increase his weekly productivity by 24%. If Dave works a six day week, how much does he need to increase his productivity each day?
* 6%
* 4%
* 24%

24%. Let's say he currently does 100 things a day. then in six days he does 600 things. If he increases his productivity by 24%, then he'll be doing 600*1.24 things, or 744 things. Divide that by 6, and you get 124, which is a 24% increase over 100.

5. Which word means "maze"?
* Labyrinth
* Larceny
* Placebo
* Pundit

Labyrinth.

6. Word is to Language as:
* Poetry is to Rhythm
* Paint is to Portrait
* Note is to Music
* Tale is to Story

unit of expression. Note to music.

7. "Give me my chair back, you _______"
* Utilitarian
* Iconoclast
* Usurper
* Reactionary

Usurper.

8. The opposite of gregarious is:
* Taciturn
* Ingenuous
* Loquacious
* Convivial

Taciturn

9. If 2x = 3, what does 6x equal?
* 8
* 6
* 9
* 12

6x is three times as big as 2x, so 9.

10. Every Sunday Julie bikes 2 miles. For the rest of the week, she bikes 1 mile more than the previous day. How many miles does Julie bike in 2 weeks?
* 56
* 70
* 86
* 35

2 on Sunday, then 3,4,5,6,7,8 then 2 on sunday,3,4,5,6,7,8.
Notice that 2+8,3+7, and 4+6 all equal 10, so you have 3 10's and a 5
which is 35 times 2 is 70.
sum(2,3,4,5,6,7,8,2,3,4,5,6,7,8)=70

11. What number comes next? 2, 3, 5, 9, ?
* 15
* 14
* 17
* 18

2+1=3,3+2=5,5+4=9,9+8=17. so, 17.

12. Which of the following is not a prime number?
* 73
* 83
* 79
* 87

87

13. Which of these US presidents did not serve in the 20th century?
* Dwight Eisenhower
* Theodore Roosevelt
* George W. Bush
* John F. Kennedy

Duh, W.

14. How many miles are in a kilometer?
* 0.6
* .06
* 1.6
* 6

.621 would be slightly more precise, but still not exact, so I guess .6 is ok.

15. Which of the following countries was not part of the Allies in World War II?
* France
* Italy
* China
* Russia

Italy was part of the Axis.

16. Of the four languages below, which is the least widely spoken?
* English
* Arabic
* Hindi
* Chinese

This one I had to look up; according to the test, the answer is Hindi, but according to the Summer Institute for Linguistics (SIL) Ethnologue Survey (1999)
which lists the following as the top languages by population, the answer should be Arabic.

(number of native speakers in parentheses)

1. Chinese* (937,132,000)
2. Spanish (332,000,000)
3. English (322,000,000)
4. Bengali (189,000,000)
5. Hindi/Urdu (182,000,000)
6. Arabic* (174,950,000)
7. Portuguese (170,000,000)
8. Russian (170,000,000)
9. Japanese (125,000,000)
10. German (98,000,000)
11. French* (79,572,000)

* The totals given for Chinese, Arabic, and French include more than one SIL variety. See chart for full details.

Not really a very fair question since Arabic and Hindi are so close together, the answer could change after a flu outbreak.

Why do people rob Banks?...

...Because that's where the money is.

I've been thinking about how this relates
to government and politicians, not just
with regard to money, but also to power.

I don't know what the answer is, perhaps
we should go back to a system where
supreme execute power is handed out by
some moistened bink who lives in a lake
and hands out swords. Just kidding,
I don't think we have any watery tarts
in this country anyway, and I'm not sure
about the proper way to hold a farcical
aquatic ceremony.

I hate talking about politics; I'd much
rather talk about the weather, at least
that's something that we can affect.

Another Great Day in Monterey

Small, but sweet!!

(note: the waves described herein did not look anything like this gently breaking wave.)
So today, I went surfing around 1pm and met up with Steve, Dalaine's beau. The waves were overhead and dumping so powerfully that cars up on the hill were shaking at Del Monte Beach, so we walked down to the wharf and surfed right next to the pier - hmmmm, tasty water! Actually, it wasn't too bad, as the tide came in it kept getting better and better, I actually managed to ride the face of a couple waves for a few fleeting moments before my fins hit bottom. Once we tired of that, we walked back to Del Monte and took the punishment head-on. Excuse me, I need to go drain some more sea water out of my nose.....ok, all good. One nice extra hot shower with lots and lots of soap, some celery, carrots and bite-sized tomatoes later (dunked liberally into a mix of honey-dijon and blue-cheese dressing) oh, and triscuits, don't forget the triscuits, I'm sitting here at my computer telling the world about my day for no apparent reason except that I like to tell stories.

Oh, here's another story for you - so, I ordered me mum a digital camera for her birthday (2/9)... (don't worry, she doesn't know about this blog, I hope) and UPS said that it was delivered last night, but I didn't see it anywhere. So, I called the shipper and UPS and they said I had to file a police report in order to get the ball rolling to get it replaced. So anyway, a couple very nice officers were here just a little while ago and they took down my information on the situation, gave me a card with the case number on it so I could get a copy of the police report and then left...and returned in less than 5 minutes with my package. It turns out that the one neighbor who I figured it couldn't have been delivered to by mistake had in fact received the package. I could have saved myself a lot of time and worry if I had just gone over and asked him, but I still can't figure out why UPS would have delivered the package to the wrong side of the building and upstairs instead of downstairs. Weird. Must have been a new driver, because the regular woman is pretty on top of things.

Anwyay, I'm sure you're all enthralled by that story... WAKE UP!!!! I said, I'm sure you're all enthralled by that story. Right?
